Lauren Casey Routt, M.A., BCBA, shares insight on Neurodiversity and Autism.

Lauren is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst at The Grace School, a member of the Children’s T.E.A.M. family of providers. She addresses key questions about Neurodiversity and Autism.

What is Neurodiversity?

A neurodivergent person is any individual whose brain development impacts the way it functions. Autistic people or people on the autism spectrum are just one group of individuals who may identify as neurodivergent.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes challenges with social communication skills as well as patterns of restrictive and repetitive behaviors.

It is important to note that Autism Spectrum Disorder is present across all races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic groups and at this time a definitive cause is not known. The current belief is that it is a combination of genetic and environmental factors that lead to this neurodiversity.

Transforming Quality of Life

I love sharing little wins with families. That can be a sibling finally having the coping skills to attend a brother’s sports game or a parent finally feeling comfortable enough so they can have a date night for the first time in years. The culmination of those little wins allows me to see how a family’s quality of life can just transform through the acquisition of different skills.
